Souls in purgatory are there because they died in friendship with God, meaning, they died in a state bereft of mortal sin.  Their other sins while forgiven, were not forgotten and thus they were not 'perfect' souls.  As Jesus said, only the perfect 'as your heavenly father is perfect', reach Heaven, it is fair to assume that almost everyone will die with some taint on their soul.  This is why purgatory exists, to basically help those who died in a state of grace, finally attain perfection.  

 

This prayer is attributed to St. Gertrude the great, if we pray this prayer 1,000 souls from purgatory are released. This is a very special thing.  This means, for seconds of our time here, we are attaining the grace from God to set free from this place of cleansing and allow ONE THOUSAND souls to enter Heaven and finally face God.

 

As a result, we cannot underestimate the gratitude that those we help set free will have towards us.  THEY SEE GOD, thus, when we ask them to help us, they will.

 "Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."
